Frequently Asked Questions

Is vaginal yeast infection common?
If you’re having a vaginal yeast infection (also called yeast vaginitis or vaginal candidiasis), you’re not alone. In fact, it’s probably way more common than you think - 75% of women get a yeast infection at some point in their lives. Between 5 - 8% of women have recurrent yeast infections, defined as four or more infections per year.
How do I know if I have a yeast infection?
You can easily self-diagnose yeast infection. Your vagina or vulva (outer part of female genitals) may be red, itchy or painful. You may experience a burning sensation when having sex or when urinating too. In addition, you may notice white and thick vaginal discharge, much like cottage cheese and curdled milk. It’s also possible for the discharge to be watery.
Can I get antibiotics prescribed to treat my vaginal yeast infection?
Do take note that antibiotics are not appropriate to treat yeast infections. Yeast infections are caused by Candida albicans, which is a type of fungus and not a bacteria. Antibiotics only kill bacteria and have no effect against any types of fungi.
Not only will taking antibiotics be ineffective in relieving your yeast infection, but it will also increase the risk of antibiotic resistance. In other words, the next time you actually get a bacterial infection, antibiotics may be less effective.
What are the possible side effects of the oral antifungal pill (Fluconazole)?
The active ingredient of the antifungal pill (Fluconazole) is generally well-tolerated, especially as a one time dose.
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and stomach upset. To prevent these side effects, you can take the pill with food. The pill may also cause diarrhea.
How can I prevent yeast infection from happening again in future?
Avoid bubble baths, scented soaps and excessively washing your vagina. Also, don’t douche, also known as vaginal rinse, where you spray a stream of water or other liquid mixtures up your vagina to clean it. Your vagina has a self-cleaning mechanism and doesn’t need these. These can alter the normal healthy conditions of the vagina, causing yeast to grow and thrive. Instead, you should wash the external vaginal area with water and an unscented soap.
Also avoid tight-fitting clothes which trap sweat and heat. When having sex, use a lubricant to reduce friction. This prevents minor damages from happening in the vagina, which would otherwise promote the growth of yeast.
How does yeast infection treatment over teleconsultation work?
Simply fill in a questionnaire about your symptoms and medical history for our doctors to review prior to any consultation. You will then be able to discuss and/or clarify any concerns that you may have with our doctors during the one-on-one video consultation. Physical examination for yeast infection diagnosis is generally not required. If appropriate, our doctors will be able to prescribe your treatment and the medications will be delivered to you in a discreet packaging.
