Frequently Asked Questions

Is urinary tract infection (UTI) common?
If you’re having a urinary tract infection, you’re not alone. In fact, it’s probably way more common than you think - occurring in 1 out of 5 women sometime in their lifetime.
How do I know if I have a UTI?
Some of the common and obvious symptoms of UTI include redness, itchiness or pain around your vagina or vulva (outer part of female genitals). You are likely to experience frequent urination (or an increased urge to pee), a burning sensation when having sex or when urinating. You might also notice cloudy, or discoloured urine (red/pink from blood) which may possibly be foul-smelling. Pelvic and abdominal pain may also be present.
What causes UTI?
UTI is mainly caused by the entry of bacteria into the urinary tract (which includes the urethra, bladder and kidneys) where they begin to multiply. Common causes for bacteria entry include the migration of bacteria from the anus to the urinary tract, as well as engaging in sexual intercourse. While sexual intercourse is one of the main reasons for UTI, one does not have to be sexually active to develop it. As women have a shorter urethra than men, bacteria are more likely to reach the bladder or kidneys, increasing the chance of UTI.
How is UTI treated?
As the source of infection is usually bacterial in nature, UTIs are treated and cured with antibiotics. Always complete your course of antibiotic treatment prescribed to reduce the risk of developing antibiotic resistance. In other words, the antibiotics become less effective if you get another bacterial infection.
How can I prevent UTI in the future?
In general, good urinary hygiene is recommended to prevent UTIs:
  • Wiping from front to back after going to the toilet to avoid fecal contamination of the urinary tract (especially during an episode of diarrhea)
  • Drinking plenty of water throughout the day
  • Avoid holding in the urge to urinate for long periods of time
  • Avoid the use of spermicides, douching, bath soaps or other irritants
  • Sexually active women should attempt to void immediately after intercouse to reduce the risk of introducing bacteria into the bladder
How does UTI treatment over teleconsultation work?
Simply fill in a questionnaire about your symptoms and medical history for our doctors to review prior to any consultation. You will then be able to discuss and/or clarify any concerns that you may have with our doctors during the one-on-one video consultation. Physical examination for UTI diagnosis is generally not required. If appropriate, our doctors will be able to prescribe your UTI treatment and the medications will be delivered to you in a discreet packaging.
