Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get birth control pills/patch without seeing a doctor?
Birth control pills/patch are only available with a prescription, so you need to consult a doctor. Speak with a doctor online through Siena from the comfort of your home, and have your medication delivered to you.
How does the birth control pill/patch work?
The birth control pill/patch works by preventing sperm from joining with an egg (i.e. fertilization). The hormones in the pill safely stop ovulation. No ovulation means there is no egg for sperm to fertilize, so pregnancy can't happen.
What are the most common side effects of birth control pills/patch?
Some side effects include spotting or bleeding between periods, sore breasts, nausea, or headaches. These usually go away after 2 or 3 months as your body adjusts to the hormones, and they don't happen to everyone who takes the pill. Birth control should not make you feel sick or uncomfortable.
What are the benefits of birth control pills/patch?
Birth control pills/patch have other potential benefits besides pregnancy prevention. It can help prevent or lessen: acne, bone thinning, cysts in your breasts and ovaries, endometrial and ovarian cancers, infections in your ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus, iron deficiency (anemia), PMS (premenstrual syndrome), reduce menstrual cramps, lighten periods, reduce unwanted hair growth and lower your risk of ectopic pregnancy.
How effective are birth control pills/patch?
Birth control pills/patch are 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when taken consistently every day. If you don’t take it as directed, however, or another factor such as a medication you’re taking at the same time affects its efficacy, you might still get pregnant.
Can you get pregnant on birth control pills/patch?
If you start within 5 days after the start of your period, you’re protected from pregnancy right away. If you start at any other time during your menstrual cycle, you’ll be protected from pregnancy after 7 days of using the pill. Abstain from sexual intercourse or use a backup method of birth control (e.g. condom) if you have vaginal sex during that time.
What should I do if I miss a pill?
Take missed pills as soon as possible. If you realize you’ve forgotten to take your combination pill, take it right away. If you’re a day behind, this might mean taking two pills in one day. If you’ve forgotten to take your mini-pill, take it right away but also use backup protection for the next two days. If you need to, you can also contact us for emergency contraception here.
Will I have trouble getting pregnant later on?
Stop taking the pill at any point if you decide you do want to get pregnant; there is no change in long-term fertility with the use of birth control pills/patch.
