What is Metronidazole 500mg, Miconazole 100mg Pessary used for?

This pessary is commonly used to treat various vaginal infections such as vaginal yeast infection (vaginal candidiasis), bacterial vaginosis (such as anaerobic vaginal infections and Gardnerella vaginalis), Trichomonas vaginalis and mixed vaginal infections. It contains two active ingredients - an antibiotic Metronidazole (500mg) and an antifungal Miconazole (100mg).

Dosage and How to Use

This pessary is meant strictly for vaginal use. Your doctor may prescribe you one of the following regimens for your infection:

1. Insert one pessary deep into the vagina in the evening for 14 days or

2. Insert one pessary in the morning and one in the evening for 7 days.

In the case of recurrent vaginitis, option one (14 days regimen) should be used.

The pessary should be inserted deep into the vagina while in the lying position, and should not be used during the menstrual period due to impaired efficacy of the product.

What are the possible side effects of the Metronidazole 500mg,Miconazole 100mg Pessary?

This medication is generally well tolerated. Vaginal irritation (eg: burning, itching) may occur after the first pessary is applied or towards the third day of the treatment due to the natural course of inflammation during vaginal infections. These symptoms are quickly reduced while the treatment continues. If there are severe irritation symptoms, stop the treatment immediately and seek medical advice. It is also common to find more vaginal discharge during the course of treatment.
