Brimonidine
3 Steps to Get Started
Mirvaso® Gel is the first FDA-approved treatment developed and indicated for persistent (nontransient) facial redness of rosacea. It contains the active ingredient Brimonidine, which is used to treat a skin condition called rosacea. Rosacea is a skin condition that affects parts of your face. Symptoms of rosacea include flushing, redness, and small lumpy red spots. Although it can look similar to 'teenage' acne, it is an unrelated condition.
Mirvaso® Gel is used to reduce redness of the skin in people with rosacea. It works by narrowing the blood vessels in the skin which in turn reduces blood flow in the skin and reduces the appearance of redness.
In clinical studies, subjects who used Mirvaso® Gel saw their redness diminished for up to 12 hours. And for many, redness began to fade fast— often in as little as 30 minutes.
On day 29 of the trials, 2-grade improvement in redness was observed with Mirvaso® Gel vs vehicle gel at hour 3 (28% vs 10%), at hour 6 (28% vs 9%), at hour 9 (22% vs 10%), and at hour 12 (22% vs 9%).
In a 1-year clinical trial, subjects who used Mirvaso® Gel daily for at least 12 months had consistent results—from day 1 through day 365.
The effect of Mirvaso® Gel is powerful - skin that has been red for days, months, or even years may suddenly look "normal" again. However, it is important to note that Mirvaso® Gel is not a cure for Rosacea. Your redness will return after the effect of the medication wears off. Avoid your triggers, even while you are using Mirvaso® Gel. As with any treatment, results can vary.
Mirvaso® Gel (Brimonidine 0.33%) should always be used as instructed by your doctor. Before you start this treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet from inside your pack. The manufacturer’s leaflet will give you more information about how to use the medicine correctly. Generally, the steps are as follows:
In clinical trials, the most common side effects that occurred in at least 1% of subjects included redness, flushing, skin burning sensation, and contact dermatitis. It may be recommended to use smaller amounts of gel until you know how your skin reacts, then gradually increase the amount used, up to the maximum (5 pea sized pumps).
Some subjects reported worsening of redness while using Mirvaso® Gel. Stop the medication and inform your doctor if this occurs. In studies, this side effect was temporary and went away on its own once the medication was stopped.
Inform your healthcare professional if:
A National Rosacea Society survey identified sun as the #1 rosacea trigger. Minimizing exposure to sun by wearing protective clothing or applying a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher may help.
