3 Steps to Get Started
Also known as Monurol, Fosfomycin is an antibiotic used to treat certain urinary tract infections in women. It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. It can also be used to prevent urinary tract infections when you undergo surgery or procedures for urinary problems.Â
This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Fosfomycin exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.Â
Take this medicine on an empty stomach, at least 2-3 hours before or after a meal, preferably before bedtime after emptying the bladder.Â
Fosfomycin comes as a sachet of granules. Empty the contents of the sachet into a glass. Add an appropriate amount of water (about half a cup) then stir to dissolve. Drink the solution immediately. Do not take the medicine in its dry form.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type and severity of your infection. Generally, for uncomplicated lower urinary tract infection, only a single dose is required.Â
Fosfomycin is generally well tolerated. It may occasionally cause dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.Â
Other side effects may include any of the following: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion, vaginal itching or irritation, and headache.
Do not take Fosfomycin if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any of its ingredients.
