What is Microgynon 30 used for?

Microgynon 30 is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) tablet. It is used by women to prevent pregnancy. A COC contains two hormones (ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel) that are similar to the natural hormones, oestrogen and progesterone, which are produced by your body.

Dosage and How to Use

Microgynon 30 is a product that contains 21 tablets. This means that you need to take one tablet every day for 21 days. This is followed by 7 days where you take no tablets.

  • Take your tablet at the same time every day.
  • Swallow each tablet whole with water. Do not chew the tablet.
  • The back of the tablet strip states the days of the week (Monday – Sunday). Start your course by taking a tablet marked with the correct day of the week. Follow the direction of the arrows on the strip and take one tablet every day until you have finished all 21 tablets.
  • After you have taken all 21 tablets in the strip, there will be 7 days where you take no tablets. This means that if you take the last tablet of one pack on a Friday, you will take the first tablet of your next pack on the Saturday of the following week.
  • A few days after taking the last tablet from the strip, you will experience a withdrawal bleed that is similar to having your period.
  • Start taking your next strip of Microgynon 30 after the 7 tablet-free days even if you are still having menstrual bleeding. Always start the new strip on time.
  • During the 7 tablet-free days, you do not need to use extra contraception such as condoms as long as you have taken your tablets correctly and start the next strip of Microgynon 30 on time.

How to start using Microgynon 30?

If you are a new user of this medicine or restarting this medicine again after a break

  • Start the tablet from day 1 of your menstrual cycle, which is the first day of your menstrual period. This will protect you from pregnancy immediately and you won't need to use any additional methods of contraception. Pregnancy is more likely if you start a new pack late.
  • If you started this medicine on days 2 to 5 of your menstrual cycle, you would need additional contraception, such as condoms, for the first 7 days of using Microgynon 30.

If you are switching from another oral contraceptive tablet

If you are currently taking a 21-day tablet:

  • Start Microgynon 30 the next day once you finish using the previous strip. This will protect you from pregnancy immediately. You will not have a menstrual bleed until after you finish your first strip of Microgynon 30.

If you are currently taking a 28-day tablet:

  • Start taking Microgynon 30 the day after your last tablet that has medicine. This will protect you from pregnancy immediately. You will not have a menstrual bleed until after you finish your first strip of Microgynon 30.

If you are currently taking a progestogen-only Pill (POP or ‘mini Pill’):

  • You can switch to taking Microgynon 30 any day from the POP. You would need additional contraception, such as condoms, for the first 7 days of using Microgynon 30.

If you are starting Microgynon 30 after a first trimester abortion

Start taking Microgyon 30 immediately. You will have contraceptive protection with your first tablet and will not need any additional contraception.

If you are starting Microgynon 30 after delivery or second trimester abortion

  • Start taking Microgynon 30 at 21 to 28 days after your delivery or second trimester abortion. If you start later, you would need additional contraception, such as condoms, for the first 7 days of using Microgynon 30.
  • If sexual intercourse has already happened, you would need to see your doctor to make sure you are not pregnant before starting this medicine. Otherwise, you should start this medicine after your first menstrual period happens.

What to do if I missed a tablet?

If you missed a tablet for less than 12 hours from your usual time

  • Take the missed tablet immediately. Your contraceptive protection is not reduced.
  • Take your next tablet as usual on the next day.

If you missed a tablet for more than 12 hours from your usual time

Your contraceptive protection may be reduced.

If you missed a dose in the first week of the cycle:

  • Take the last missed tablet as soon as you remember, even if it means taking 2 tablets at the same time.
  • Take your next tablet as usual on the next day.
  • You would need additional contraception, such as condoms, for the next 7 days.
  • If sexual intercourse happened in the previous 7 days, you might be pregnant. See your doctor for advice as soon as possible.

If you missed a dose in the second week of the cycle:

  • Take the last missed tablet as soon as you remember, even if it means taking 2 tablets at the same time.
  • Take your next tablet as usual on the next day.
  • If you did not miss any tablets the previous 7 days, you do not need to have extra contraception. However, if this is not the case or you missed more than 1 tablet, you would need additional contraception, such as condoms, for the next 7 days.

If you missed a dose in the third week of the cycle:

If you took your tablets correctly in the previous 7 days, follow any of the following 2 methods. You do not need extra contraception. If this was not the case, follow the first method and you would need additional contraception, such as condoms, for the next 7 days.

  • First method: Take the last missed tablet as soon as you remember, even if it means taking 2 tablets at the same time. Take your next tablet as usual on the next day. Start the next pack as soon as the current pack is completed, without having 7 medicine-free days. You will not have a menstrual bleed until after you finish your second pack of Microgynon 30. You might have some bleeding on the days you take your medicine. If you missed tablets and do not have any menstrual bleeding in the medicine-free day, you might be pregnant. See your doctor for advice as soon as possible.
  • Second method: Stop taking your medicine from your current pack for 7 days. Start a new pack after 7 days.

What possible side effects of the medicines?

This medicine may cause nausea, breast soreness, bloating, mood changes, headache, vaginal bleeding between periods (spotting) and missed or irregular period. These symptoms normally improve within two to three months without treatment.

If you missed 2 menstrual periods in a row (or 1 menstrual period if the tablet has not been used correctly), contact your doctor for a pregnancy test.

It may also cause chloasma (yellow brown patches on the skin). This may happen even if you have been using Microgynon 30 for a number of months. You can reduce this by avoiding exposure to the sun or ultraviolet light while taking this medicine.

This medicine might increase your risk of problems such as blood clots, heart problems and breast cancer. Your doctor will monitor you for any problems.

How do I know if I am allergic to these medicines?

The symptoms of a drug allergy include one or more of the following:

  • Swollen face/eyes/lips
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Itchy skin rashes over your whole body

If you experience any of these symptoms, you should stop your medicine immediately and see your doctor.

  • There are several medicines that affect the level of Microgynon 30 in your body. Please see your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicines, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and herbal products.
